17 Brutal Truths About Sales I Wish I Knew at 23

17 Brutal Truths About Sales I Wish I Knew at 23

After grief and addiction nearly ended his career, Carlos Siqueira rebuilt by learning to ask better questions. In this episode, he shares 17 hard-won sales lessons about trust, buyer psychology, NEPQ, silence, AI, and what it takes to start again.

By 23, Carlos had helped generate fifty million dollars in revenue and trained almost a hundred salespeople. Then his best friend in Brazil died by suicide — and Carlos, an immigrant alone in America, spiraled into drugs and drinking trying to numb it. He almost walked away from everything.

In this episode, Carlos gets more personal than he ever has on the show — grief, addiction, and the lie that success fixes what's underneath — before breaking down 17 brutal truths about sales: the six buying motives behind every purchase, the dopamine-vs-norepinephrine chemistry of every yes, NEPQ (Neuro-Emotional Persuasion Questions) and why asking beats pitching, why rapport doesn't close deals but trust does, and the truth AI can't touch — it can write your pitch, but it can't deliver it.

If you sell anything — enterprise deals, coaching, insurance, real estate, yourself — or if you're carrying more than you're showing right now, this episode is for you.

Note: this episode includes a discussion of suicide and substance use. If you or someone you know is struggling, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988 in the US) is free and available 24/7.

By 23, I'd helped telecom companies generate fifty million dollars in revenue. Trained almost a hundred salespeople. Looked like I had it all figured out. Then I got the call. My best friend in Brazil went blind. His own parents told him he was useless. Told him they'd never be able to help him. He killed himself. I almost lost it. I was alone in America. An immigrant with no family in the room. So I did what a lot of us do with pain like that. Heavy drugs. Drinking every night. I almost quit everything. Because drugs don't heal you. They just numb you.

Here's the truth nobody tells you. The training never stops. New levels. New devils. Grow your company. Grow your bank account. Grow whatever it is you're chasing. The pain doesn't stop showing up. You just get better at holding it together when it does. I have billionaire friends. I asked one of them once: what does it actually feel like? He said: it's just another zero in the account. The insecurity's still there. The comparison's still there. The fear never fully leaves. You just learn to manage it better.

Nobody told me any of this. About selling. Or about life. Today I'm telling you all of it. Seventeen truths. No filter. Some of these will make you angry. Good. Anger means it's true. Let's go.

Truth one. Nobody buys your product. They buy the version of themselves they become after they own it. And that decision gets made in their mind before your mouth ever opens. Their conscious mind can say yes or no. Their non-conscious mind can only say yes. You're not pitching a room. You're pitching two minds at once.

Truth two. People don't buy logic. They make the decision with emotion. Then they use logic to justify it after. If your pitch is all spreadsheet and no story, you already lost. Think of any course, mastermind, or retreat you ever bought. Remember the story they told you?

Truth three. Every deal you ever lost, you lost in the first two minutes. Not the last two. The close doesn't fail. The opening failed. You just found out later.

Truth four. There are only six reasons any human being buys anything. Love. Gain. Duty. Pride. Self-indulgence. Self-preservation. Cavemen had them. Pharaohs had them. Your prospect has them right now. Stop describing your product. Nobody cares what it is. They care what it lets them do that they couldn't do before. And underneath every pitch, they're asking one quiet question. Is this safe? Is this sure? Can I count on it? Answer that and you've already got permission to say yes. That's why I get booked to speak as often as I do. What I teach is PCS. Predictable. Certain. Secure. Backed by twenty-five-plus years and over a billion in revenue driven for Fortune 500 companies.

Truth five. Desire is a chemical. Dopamine. Fear and frustration are chemicals too. Norepinephrine. The more of either you create in someone's mind, the more they lean toward you.

Truth six. The best closers don't pick one. They create tension between the two. Desire pulling them forward. Fear pushing them off the fence. That tension — that's where the yes lives.

Truth seven. Urgency you fake, they can smell in one sentence. Urgency that's real — mortality, opportunity cost, the clock actually running out — that's the only urgency that closes and doesn't cancel Tuesday.

Truth eight. The best salespeople I've ever met ask more than they tell. There's a method for this now. Backed by behavioral science. It's called neuro-emotional persuasion questioning. NEPQ. People hate being sold. People love buying when they feel understood. So you stop pitching. You ask the question that lets them persuade themselves.

Truth nine. "How does this sound to you so far?" "What would it mean for your family if this worked?" Those aren't filler questions. Those are trial closes. A pitch without a trial close is just a monologue nobody asked for.

Truth ten. Silence is a closing tool. Most reps talk straight through their own yes. Ask the question. Then shut up. The first one to talk after the question loses leverage. And "I need to think about it" is not an objection. It's a request for more clarity you didn't give them. Go back. Find the gap. Don't argue with the smoke screen.

Truth eleven. If you need the commission, they can feel it through the phone. Neediness has a smell. And it kills more deals than price ever will.

Truth twelve. Rapport doesn't close deals. Trust closes deals. You can like someone and still not trust them with your money.

Truth thirteen. Quota isn't hit by working harder. It's hit by asking sharper questions to fewer, better conversations. I didn't out-hustle anybody for eight straight years. I out-asked them.

Truth fourteen. Here's one that took me too long to learn. Closing the sale means nothing if you can't protect what you earned. I stacked commission checks for years. No real plan to keep them. That's what got my wife and me into this. We run something called DisruptorsCode.com now. We help people grow and protect their money — tax-free. Economy collapses, you don't lose. Markets go up, it grows tax-free. Transfers tax-free to the people you love when you're gone. Your money finally working as hard as you do. If that's you, go to DisruptorsCode.com, book a call. Email info@carlosinspire.com and we'll confirm we're licensed in your state before anything happens. Alright. Back to the truths.

Truth fifteen. Here's the one nobody in this industry wants to say out loud. AI can write your pitch for you right now. Tonight. In thirty seconds.

Truth sixteen. AI cannot deliver it. AI cannot sit across from a scared prospect. AI cannot hold the silence after the trial close. AI cannot look someone in the eye and tell them the truth. They are not buying your slide deck. They are buying you — standing behind it.

Truth seventeen. The day you stop being afraid of the word "no" is the day your income changes forever. I know because I lived it. Early twenties. Sleeping in my car after a blown deal. I was contracting sales for a telecom company. They took the office. The apartment. My whole team. So I did what I do best. I started over. I asked one question: what are telecom companies struggling with? What are their competitors getting wrong? I pitched them commission-only. Put my mouth where the money was. Hired a few guys. Took them out to the field. Showed them exactly how I did it. Had them replicate it. One month later — seventy-five thousand dollars in revenue for that company. Twenty-five thousand dollars awarded to me in commission. From there, I started working Fortune 50 accounts. Comcast Xfinity. Eight years. Zero missed quotas. Over a billion dollars in revenue driven. I've helped generate over a billion dollars for the companies I've worked with. Still the same guy. I just learned to ask better questions. So can you.

Seventeen truths. Write down the one that stung the most. That's the one costing you money right now. You know the drill, the days that break us are truly the days that make us.
